student accommodationAdelaide offers international students a diverse range of accommodation options to meet all budgets.  Before deciding on where to live however, it is important that you consider:
  • The distance of your accommodation from the Regency International Centre and other facilities such as shopping centres, entertainment and sporting complexes
  • Access to public transport systems
  • Preferred living environment ie inner-city, beach or suburbs
  • Whether you would prefer to live alone, or to share with others to reduce your living costs; and
  • The amount you can afford to spend on accommodation given your other living expenses such as food, utilities, entertainment, petrol and clothes.
Taking into consideration all of these factors, the most popular types of student accommodation are dormitory-style residences and private rental accommodation.

Student dormitory-style residences

Purpose-built student residences provide you with either a twin room or private room (so you can concentrate on your studies) and access to shared facilities such as kitchens, laundries and common rooms where you can meet and socialise with other students.  Some student residences also offer daily meals.

(Cost range:  AUD$110 - $155)

Private rental accommodation

A private rental allows you to choose where you want to live and with who.  In addition to paying weekly rent, you will also need to budget for utilities such as electricity, gas, water and telephone.

The rent payable will depend on the style and age of the property and where it is located.  Before securing the rental property you will need to sign a tenancy agreement and pay up to four weeks rent in advance.  You may also need to provide references to the landlord (or their agent) to demonstrate your suitability as a tenant.

Houses usually consist of three or four bedrooms with at least one bathroom, kitchen, dining room, lounge room, laundry, garage and a front/back garden.  Students often share with other students where you can expect your own room, but share the rest of the house and expenses with the other tenants.

You can expect to pay approximately AUD$240 - $550 per week for a four bedroom house.  If a house is advertised as a ‘shared house’ it means that it has already been leased, has some occupants and there is a room available to be rented.  In this circumstance the rent may start at AUD$70 per week, plus utilities (extra if furnished).

Units, flats and townhouses are smaller than a house with one to three bedrooms, a lounge/dining room, bathroom, laundry and sometimes a small front and backyard.  You can expect to pay AUD$130 - $560 for an unfurnished one to two bedroom apartment, plus an additional AUD$70 for utilities.
